Why Relatively Speaking ?

My philosophy is that family history should be more than just a series of names and dates. The life of our ancestors was significantly different if they lived in the town or the country, if their family was rich or poor, or if they had access to education or not. Over several generations it is possible to see whether an occupation was passed down from father to son, whether a family shows social mobility and whether they remained in the same area or moved around the country for work or other reasons. Were their occupations typical of the area where they lived, did they have to start work at an early age or could their family afford to pay for professional training or studies? I believe that only by looking at details of this kind can we gain real insight into our ancestors' lives and enable these long-dead relatives to speak to us today.

About me
I was born and grew up in Stockport, before studying French at UEA, Norwich, including a year spent at Neuchâtel University in Switzerland where I met my future husband. Since our marriage we have lived in England, Switzerland and France with our four children. My interest in genealogy and family history dates back to childhood, and recently led to me follow a post-graduate course of genealogical studies at the University of Strathclyde. I spent many years researching for family and friends before deciding to set up Relatively Speaking with the aim of sharing my enthusiasm, knowledge and expertise in a professional setting.
